Recording 2 (Engine)
2024
Glazed ceramic

Inspired by expressive ceramic work of the ‘60s and ‘70s, the recording series turns the emphasis of the fired work towards the messy design process that brought it into being. The creation and destruction happening simultaneously before firing complicates their opposition. Both are necessary to bring the work into being, but the expression of the vases lies in the violence towards the form.

Recording 2 (Engine) has both fluid and rigid methods of demolition, with clay doodles found in the reclaim bin of the studio lying cracked and surrounding the larger forms. The vases are ruptured more violently than in Recording 1, abandoning the functional and legible vessel with an understanding that the energy is held in the noticeable lack of volume that the forms once had. If Recording 1 is viewing a tornado from the outside, this project takes you inside, holding an organized control over the havoc, taking power and agency from the vases.

The inside of the standing vases are glazed red, while the outside is stained minimally. The application of stains emphasizes the smaller cracks and crumbles. The glazed sections are the flesh to the stained ceramics’ skin. The surrounding rubble incorporates both finishes, merging outside and inside together to punctuate the violation of vessel.
