Glazed ceramic
Inspired by expressive ceramic work of the ‘60s and ‘70s, the recording series turns the emphasis of the fired work towards the messy design process that brought it into being. The creation and destruction happening simultaneously before firing complicates their opposition. Both are necessary to bring the work into being, but the expression of the vases lies in the violence towards the form.
Recording #1 remains a standing vessel, but is gouged and abused by small clay doodles that were lying in the reclaim bin of the studio. The doodles are covered by maximalist glaze that blends the pieces into a tornado. The glaze application is as expressive as the form, taking from abstract expressionist painters like Helen Frankenthaler. The work does not stand on its own, the metal crutches force its verticality/survival.
